Student Rights and Responsibilities. A unit member charged with a violation or complaint under the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy shall have the right to representation at all hearings pursuant to said policy, provided that any such representation shall be at the unit member’s expense. Hearings for unit members charged under the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy shall be conducted by professional employees of WCPS or by the elected Board.

The Constitution of the United States, through the Bill of Rights and subsequent amendments, gives all persons certain rights, and the United States Supreme Court has declared that students do not shed those constitutional rights by walking through the school door. Students are protected by the Constitution, and that responsibility for protection applies to boards of education as it does to other rule-making authorities regarding the student behavior, but such authority is balanced by the Constitution and the courts. Responsibilities, on the other hand, are not so clearly spelled out by law. While an individual does have a right to pursue his or her own self-fulfillment, those rights terminate at the point where they infringe upon the rights of others. Store it in a safe place when eating and during non-academic times (lunchtime, after school activities, etc.) ● Keep all food and beverages away from devices, and out of the hot sun or winter cold (both outdoors and indoors). ● Decorations/Serial Number Labels: o Leave the serial number label or any LCSD issued label in place and undisturbed. o Grades K-8 may not place decorations such as stickers, markers, etc. on devices. o Grades 9-12 may place removable stickers on devices, but markers/drawing, etc. are not allowed. ● Maintenance: o Individuals are responsible for ensuring the device’s battery is charged daily. Devices must be kept in a safe location, away from pets and babies/others that are likely to cause damage. o In case of theft, vandalism, breakage or any other event that disables a device, create an Incident IQ ticket with the designated person at the school. o The technology department services all devices – Students must not disassemble devices or attempt any repairs. ● Student complaints regarding the use of technology or requests to use a personal electronic device may be made directly to a classroom teacher and then to an administrator. If the student is not satisfied with the principal’s decision, they may appeal using the procedures outlined in LCSD policy KL-AR (Public Complaints).
